Eastside Community Center

Let’s take root together! Join us to sustain Tacoma’s communities and trees amidst the pressures of climate change and rapid development.

How deep are your Tacoma roots?

They might be deep, spread far and wide, like the roots of the mighty Western redcedars that shade our homes. Or, they might be young yet purposeful like those of a Pacific dogwood sapling, which one day, will brighten the sidewalks in spring.

Whether we’re old-timers or newcomers, we’ve all chosen to take root in Tacoma.

We at the Tacoma Tree Foundation are taking root here because the city’s diverse communities are standing up to grow green and healthy neighborhoods. Residents are showing up, smiling, on a weekend morning in the pouring rain to plant trees for their neighbors or to walk together and learn about the wonders of trees. They’re speaking up to make sure trees have protections, so everyone can breath clean air and commute in cool streets. We want to sustain this movement and make sure Tacoma is tree-lined for generations to come!

This spring, help us raise $100,000 by attending our culminating social event, sponsoring our fundraiser, or making a gift. Let’s continue supporting Tacoma’s communities and trees, and together, take root amidst the pressures of climate change and rapid development.

TESTIMONIALS

"When I drive home from work now, I notice how each block's trees are maturing together, and I look forward to driving down these streets 20 years from now when they've all grown into a connected canopy. "

Why Trees?

Tacoma needs trees. We have the lowest tree canopy coverage of any city in Western Washington. Our trees are concentrated in parks, steep slopes, and neighborhoods with higher socioeconomic opportunities. These parts of the city benefit from more than double the tree coverage compared to other areas. But even in these neighborhoods, tree benefits are not optimal since a healthy urban forest throughout Tacoma is necessary to sustain everyone. We’re working to grow an urban forest for all.

Who is TTF?

We are a six-year old organization, and we need your support so that we can take root and continue supporting neighborhoods in Greater Tacoma and the Puget Sound region through our community focused education, planting, and advocacy efforts.

Since 2021, we have distributed 12,000 trees focusing on bringing them to historically underserved neighborhoods.

  • In 2024, we served a total of 475 households and distributed 5300 trees across the region. More than 60% of these trees found homes in priority neighborhoods.

  • Our planting efforts are rooted in a robust education program that includes tree walks, tree care, science and arts workshops and presentations, a youth program, and we offer an average of 70 free events a year, including the Tacoma-Pierce County Climate Leadership Cohort.

  • 50% of our tree walks are bilingual (Spanish-English tree walks)

  • Through our advocacy efforts we inform the public about tree protections, and contribute to growing a region where communities do not have to choose between the benefits of trees and affordable housing.
